New Trump tariffs bring in less money than illegal tariffs

After the Supreme Court struck down the Trump administration's emergency tariff regime, officials have replaced it with narrower duties under a different legal framework. Axios reports the new tariffs generate about one hundred five billion dollars annually, replacing roughly sixty percent of the lost revenue. Over a ten-year projection, the administration's latest tariffs would raise nine hundred fifty billion dollars, compared to one point seven trillion from the broader emergency duties — leaving an eight hundred twenty-five billion dollar gap. The new tariffs carry lower rates and include more exclusions, particularly for energy products, which helps limit inflationary pressure. Treasury is still unwinding the old regime; last month, refunds to importers exceeded new collections by twenty-five point six billion dollars.
