Admiral Yi Sun-Shin, a legendary Korean naval commander of the sixteenth century, revolutionized maritime warfare through innovation and tactical brilliance. When Japan launched invasions of Korea in the fifteen nineties, Yi transformed the Korean navy from a depleted, undisciplined force into a formidable power. He pioneered the Turtle Boat—a heavily armored vessel with multiple cannons—and developed a revolutionary tactic of maintaining distance from enemies and relying on superior firepower rather than boarding tactics, which was standard for the time. Per Atlas Obscura, Yi's fleet of eighty-five vessels, including twenty-four Turtle Boats, defeated the Japanese invasion force in a series of battles, most famously destroying over seventy enemy ships at the Battle of Hahsnan. Though Yi was eventually killed in battle in fifteen ninety-eight, his legacy earned him comparisons to Admiral Nelson—today, a monument to Yi and a replica Turtle Boat stand in the parking lot of a Korean spa in Chantilly, Virginia.
