More than 100,000 people flee or are locked down as wildfires sweep France and Spain

More than one hundred thousand people have fled or been ordered to shelter in place as intense wildfires sweep across Spain and France, The Guardian reports. Spain has declared a national emergency, while French authorities ordered the total evacuation, by land and sea, of Cap Ferret, one of the country's best-known holiday spots on the Atlantic coast. Officials described the blaze there as intense and highly unpredictable, saying it has already burned through more than twelve thousand five hundred hectares of forest. The peninsula is being cleared village by village as crews struggle to get ahead of the flames.
