How inner work can destabilize your life

other

Per LessWrong, inner-work practices like meditation can paradoxically destabilize people—and here's why. You can become much more aware of your body and emotions, more perceptive and sensitive to beauty and pain, without becoming any more resilient or at-ease with what you're perceiving. When awareness goes up but equanimity—your capacity to stay calm and unbothered—stays flat, you've essentially turned up the volume on conscious experience without raising your pain tolerance. That's a recipe for panic attacks and years-long destabilization. The post maps the danger zones: low awareness plus low equanimity gives you burnout and addiction; high awareness plus high equanimity gives flow and charisma. The risky middle is high awareness but low equanimity—exactly what some people land in after diving into meditation or therapy without sufficient support. Real improvements in equanimity, the author suggests, seem to require something external: meaningful relationships, one-on-one coaching, basic safety and stability, or occasionally, pure luck. Self-directed work alone rarely delivers the goods.
