Radio-frequency chips—the components in phones, cars, and satellites that handle wireless signals—have long been designed by human engineers working almost by intuition. But according to research from Princeton's Kaushik Sengupta, published in IEEE Spectrum, artificial intelligence can now design these chips from scratch without any human templates. The results look nothing like traditional chip layouts. In fact, they resemble QR codes. And surprisingly, the AI-designed chips outperform their human-engineered counterparts.
