Hugon Savusaunat in Rautjärvi, Finland

According to Atlas Obscura, in Finland's South Karelia region, two octagonal smoke saunas named Horna and Hiisi represent some of the most authentic sauna experiences in the country. Built using traditional hand-construction techniques on the shore of Lake Rautjärvi, these saunas operate without modern conveniences like chimneys. Instead, a fire burns directly inside the sauna room for four to six hours, filling the space with smoke that blackens the walls and ceiling—creating a surface that retains heat with remarkable efficiency. Once the fire dies and the smoke clears, the result is a gentle, enveloping warmth unlike anything a modern electric sauna can produce. The property, nicknamed Hugo's after the owner's grandfather, is heated every Friday by a group of local men continuing a ritual that has shaped Finnish life for centuries. Visitors are welcome to join. The saunas sit within broader layers of history: the property once served as a military headquarters during World War II, and the surrounding Saimaa region was shaped by the last ice age.
