3D On The Playdate Handheld

tech

Developer Cristina Ramos has pushed the Playdate handheld further than skeptics thought possible. Per Hackaday, she built a 3D renderer for the console, starting with a raycaster—the same technique behind classic Wolfenstein 3D—to understand the hardware's performance limits. She then advanced to a more sophisticated binary space partitioning engine that can load Quake-format map files, complete with texture mapping and lighting. The trick was making it work on the Playdate's 1-bit monochrome screen—Ramos used a cel-shaded approach to keep everything readable despite the severe constraints. The engine and game remain in progress, but Ramos has already proven doubters wrong twice: first that 3D was even possible, then that it could handle expansive exterior levels like those in Mirror's Edge.
