The Once And Future Fable #4

ai

Claude Fable 5, Anthropic's advanced reasoning model, became unavailable to US customers following government restrictions — but the signs of restoration are mounting. Betting markets now give a sixty percent chance it returns by July first, and eighty-eight percent by month's end. According to LessWrong, recent updates to Claude Code hinted at preparation for Fable's return, with new references to weekly usage quotas for subscribers. The model has also reappeared on Amazon Bedrock. Yet the underlying policy remains contentious. The Trump administration is pressuring all major AI labs — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and Microsoft — to submit their models for government review. Meta stands as the sole holdout. The deeper issue: restricting public access to models doesn't actually slow frontier labs from developing more capable versions internally. Anthropic and others continue training increasingly powerful systems, even while their public releases remain constrained. The uncertainty may actually accelerate private development — or push labs to keep breakthroughs hidden entirely, avoiding any chance of triggering the next embargo.
