Is Burnham’s Oxbridge-heavy cabinet a sign of social mobility or lack of progress on class?

Prime Minister Andy Burnham's new cabinet has drawn scrutiny for its composition. One case in point: Kanishka Narayan, the new minister for AI, went to Eton and then Oxford—a path roughly twenty previous British prime ministers have also taken. Yet Narayan's background is far from typical. He was born in India and moved to Cardiff at age twelve, when his parents—who ran a petrol station—couldn't afford private school. He and his younger brother slept on the floor of their one-bedroom home. Teachers recognized his potential and encouraged him to apply to elite schools. A full scholarship to Eton made it possible. After Oxford, where he studied PPE, he earned an MBA from Stanford and pursued a career in finance. Per the Guardian, the cabinet's increased diversity sits uncomfortably beside its continuing Oxbridge concentration, raising a question about the UK's ruling class: does Narayan's scholarship signal real social mobility, or does it mask a system unchanged at its core?
