‘Extraordinarily hot’: US heatwave stretches on with millions still under warnings

Forty million Americans are under extreme heat warnings as a heat dome settles over the central and southern United States for a second consecutive day. Heat indexes are climbing well above one hundred degrees Fahrenheit from Minnesota to Mississippi, extending west into California and Nevada. The National Weather Service forecasts highs near one hundred twenty degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the southwest.
