The historic German housewives who laid the groundwork for today’s tradwives

According to academic research from The Conversation, today's tradwife movement—which celebrates traditional gender roles and domestic life—isn't as novel as it might seem. Scholar Katherine Calvert traces the ideology back to early twentieth-century German housewives' associations, which similarly promoted domesticity and motherhood as women's primary role. Both movements used religious language and openly rejected feminism. The historical groups also embraced ethno-nationalism and, by the nineteen-thirties, became closely aligned with Nazi ideology. Calvert notes that while modern tradwife influencers frame their lifestyle as personal choice, the ideological foundations—including anti-feminist and ethno-nationalist elements—echo a troubling historical precedent. As right-wing populism gains support today, she argues, understanding these deeper ideological roots is essential to grasping what the tradwife movement actually represents.
