NASA’s Hubble Shows Star Formation in Andromeda Galaxy Winding Down

Per NASA News, a new study using Hubble Space Telescope data shows star formation in Andromeda, the spiral galaxy two-point-five million light-years away, has been in steady decline for five hundred million years. By measuring two hundred million individual stars, researchers determined the formation rate has dropped to roughly one-fifth of what it was five hundred million years ago—with the steepest drop concentrated in the last forty million years. The slowdown appears to be a natural winding down from the galaxy's previous highly active period, not a depletion of stellar material.
