Elon Musk says AI will make a ‘historically accurate’ Odyssey – here’s why that’s impossible

Elon Musk has promised that his AI image generator Grok Imagine will produce a full-length, historically accurate film of Homer's Odyssey before year's end. The announcement arrived on X in July, just as Christopher Nolan's live-action Odyssey reached cinemas worldwide. Per The Conversation, though, the promise collides with a fundamental problem: AI has never encountered the ancient past—only films about it. Trained on Gladiator, Troy, three-hundred, and a century of sword-and-sandal cinema, Grok Imagine doesn't reach back into history. It averages existing movies. That process doesn't correct our mistakes; it concentrates them. Ask the model for a classical statue and you get gleaming white marble, because that's how we picture antiquity. But Greek and Roman sculpture was actually painted in vibrant colors. An AI reproduces our errors and calls them historical truth. The real barrier is that accuracy requires deliberate human choices—decisions about light and framing made with intention and vision. AI works by consensus, producing only the average. And that is where nothing memorable lives.
