Pinochet-era soldier jailed for killing folk singer Víctor Jara 53 years ago

More than fifty years after Chilean folk singer Víctor Jara was killed in the early days of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, the last man convicted in his murder is finally behind bars. The Guardian reports that Nelson Haase Mazzei, a retired army colonel, was sentenced in absentia back in 2023 alongside six other former soldiers, but fled before authorities could detain him. He was tracked down and taken into custody on Monday, closing out one of the most enduring cases from Chile's Pinochet era.
