On Monday, NASA's Swift Observatory captured an unusually distant cosmic disaster: a star being torn apart by a wandering supermassive black hole far outside its galaxy's core. The star drifted too close to the black hole—about a million times the Sun's mass—triggering what's called a tidal disruption event, where extreme gravity shreds the star into ribbons of incandescent debris. For a few months, this cosmic shredding outshone the entire galaxy, radiating with the brightness of ten billion suns. NASA News reports that this is only the second confirmed tidal disruption event ever observed outside a galaxy's center, suggesting supermassive black holes can roam far from where we thought they were anchored. Researchers believe this particular black hole likely originated in a smaller galaxy that merged with the larger one, and was flung toward the edge by gravitational interactions. The discovery validates a new detection technique—one that could help astronomers hunt down more of these 'wandering' black holes in the coming years.
