Trump tries to sell an economy voters aren't buying

President Trump is taking his economic message on the road with a speech in Michigan, aiming to sell voters on his administration's policies. But Axios reports the pitch isn't resonating. A CBS News and YouGov poll found just thirty-five percent of Americans approve of Trump's handling of the economy, while sixty-five percent disapprove. On inflation, it's worse: twenty-nine percent approval and seventy-one percent disapproval. Only twenty-four percent of Americans view the economy as excellent or good under the Trump administration this year—down eight percentage points from last year, according to a Fox News poll. Yet the economy is voters' top issue ahead of the 2026 midterms, and it's shaping up as a key battleground. Fifty-four percent of voters think Democrats would handle the economy better, compared to forty-five percent who favor Republicans. As Democrats show stronger voter enthusiasm heading into November, control of Congress increasingly depends on which party voters trust more on the economy.
