The computer that helped win World War II

According to the Adafruit Blog, in nineteen forty-one, a British radio operator intercepted something unexpected on German military frequencies—not the familiar morse code of Enigma, but a high-speed stream of binary teletype signals. Germany had engineered a cipher far more advanced than the nineteen-twenty Enigma. To break it, engineer Tommy Flowers—who had previously built Enigma-cracking equipment with mathematician Alan Turing—created Colossus, the world's first large-scale programmable electronic digital computer. The achievement is now recognized as an IEEE Milestone, with a dedication ceremony scheduled for September twenty-ninth at Bletchley Park.
