Crypto ATMs are here to stay despite their scam risks. How should NZ regulate them?

business

Cryptocurrency ATMs are spreading across New Zealand — about two hundred machines now sit in dairies, petrol stations, and vape shops nationwide. Per The Conversation, they've become a magnet for fraud: scammers pose as police or tax officials to trick victims into depositing cash, and the machines don't reverse transactions once completed. In the US alone, the FBI logged over thirteen thousand crypto ATM scam complaints in twenty twenty-five, with losses exceeding three hundred eighty-eight million dollars. New Zealand's government considered banning the machines entirely but has chosen regulation instead, with proposed safeguards including transaction limits, cooling-off periods, and mandatory fraud warnings — designed to protect vulnerable users without shutting down legitimate access for the estimated fifty thousand New Zealanders without bank accounts.
