Meta disregarded its own research on teen harm, Tennessee lawyers tell jury

Tennessee's trial against Meta opened Monday in Nashville, with state attorneys telling the jury the company knew its own research showed Instagram and Facebook harmed teenagers yet kept features like autoplay, notifications and infinite scroll running. The Guardian reports the state says those design choices were meant to maximize teen engagement and ad views, citing internal findings that linked compulsive use to eating disorders, depression and self-harm. Meta's attorneys countered by pointing to the company's transparency efforts. The trial is expected to run seven weeks.
