Trump is sowing fear over Cuba, terrorism and the ‘radical left’. This is what could come next

politics

The Trump administration is escalating pressure on Cuba through a new diplomatic offensive. Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a nearly one hundred-page State Department report arguing that Cuba has spent decades supporting and influencing leftist movements in the United States, including alleged connections to the Democratic Socialists of America. Per The Conversation, the report links historical espionage cases to modern activism—from alleged Weather Underground contacts in the nineteen seventies to contemporary activism and revolutionary tourism. Concurrently, the administration has imposed an oil blockade, expanded sanctions, and indicted former leader Fidel Castro. The timing mirrors a broader geopolitical shift following the costly Iran conflict and precedes November midterm elections. Trump officials have not ruled out military action against the island, raising stakes for a nation already facing humanitarian hardship.
