Over half of Australians surveyed don’t know how the RBA is fighting inflation – making it harder to beat
business
A new Reserve Bank survey reveals a troubling gap in Australian economic literacy: more than half of those surveyed don't understand how the RBA uses interest rates to fight inflation. The Conversation reports that only twenty-five percent correctly answered that higher rates lower inflation—more than half mistakenly believed the opposite, that higher rates would worsen inflation instead. The survey also revealed other misconceptions: many thought the RBA sets tax rates, controls the exchange rate, or regulates banks. But there's good news—majorities trust the central bank itself, seeing it as acting with integrity and making decisions based on facts. RBA Governor Michele Bullock acknowledged the communication gap, saying the bank needs to do a better job explaining monetary policy in simple terms. Inflation remains Australia's top economic concern, and new data is expected to inform the RBA's next rate decision.
