De-Aging Human Tissue Using Special Enzyme to Remove AGEs
health
Hackaday reports that researchers at San Francisco-based Revel Pharmaceuticals have engineered an enzyme that breaks down CML, a waste product that accumulates in aging tissue and contributes to diabetes, kidney disease, and age-related conditions. Testing the enzyme, called CMLase, on tissue samples from elderly donors showed it reduced CML by fifty-five percent in skin and seventy-five percent in arterial tissue. These laboratory results are ex vivo, so human trials will be needed to demonstrate safety and whether removing these waste products leads to healthier tissues in living patients.
