‘Photonic multi-lane highway’ enjoys insulator-free topological protection

Researchers in China have demonstrated a new photonic material that can carry multiple light signals at the same time without the bulky insulation normally required, according to Physics World. Built on a structure called a photonic valley half-semimetal, the design creates what the team calls a four-lane highway for light, using different properties of the material to handle both waveguiding and topological protection. This solves a fundamental inefficiency in traditional photonic devices: they required large regions of opaque, inert material just for insulation, wasting valuable space. In this design, every part of the device actively transmits light. The prototype currently works at microwave frequencies, but researchers believe the approach could extend to terahertz frequencies for ultra-compact integrated photonic circuits—though managing fabrication tolerances and signal loss at higher frequencies remain significant challenges.
