UN's renewable-powered AI goal meets physical reality
tech
Per Axios, the United Nations is calling for all data centers to be powered by renewable energy by twenty thirty. But electricity demand from these facilities is projected to at least double in the next four years, and energy analysts say the goal is unrealistic. While renewables are set to surpass coal this year and could account for more than a third of data centers' power by twenty thirty, fossil fuels combined still outpaced renewable and nuclear growth. Tech companies are increasingly buying clean energy credits to offset emissions, but as one analyst notes, that's largely an accounting exercise — actual emissions keep rising in the physical world.
