Japan earthquake injures 50 and traps ‘many people’ inside shopping mall

A magnitude six point eight earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu island in southern Japan on Tuesday afternoon, injuring at least fifty people. The Guardian reports that a shopping mall partly collapsed, trapping people inside who are presumed dead, while the quake also knocked out power to thousands of homes and damaged roads and bridges. Kumamoto has experienced destructive earthquakes before, and authorities are still assessing the full scope of the damage.
