Speak or resign: Beshear ups demand for McConnell health status
politics
According to Axios, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has issued a blunt ultimatum to Senator Mitch McConnell: publicly address your constituents, or resign. The eighty-four-year-old Republican hasn't been seen in public for over forty days—only office-released photographs have surfaced since his hospitalization following a June fall. In his letter, Beshear argued that public office requires sacrifice of privacy in the name of transparency, and that Kentuckians deserve to hear directly from their senator. The governor also sent his letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, calling for an investigation into McConnell's capacity to serve. Congress's physician's office confirmed that McConnell is recovering through strenuous physical therapy and rehabilitation, noting that his childhood case of polio significantly impacts his mobility. McConnell's office responded that he remains committed to returning to his full Senate schedule. He will retire at the end of his term in January twenty twenty-seven.
