Breaking the Parental Lock on an XBox 360 is Very Much an Inconvenience

Hackaday reports on a resourceful fix for an unusable problem: an Xbox 360 console that cost fifteen dollars, discarded with its parental lock still engaged. Without the original password, the device was essentially bricked—and Microsoft no longer runs a reset service. The solution? A Teensy microcontroller running a brute-force attack on the parental lock code. After five hours of automated attempts, the console came back to life. There's a harder alternative: a NAND Flash programmer for a hardware-level reset, but that's invasive. Soft modifications failed because the games offering backdoor access weren't rated for everyone. It's a reminder that device locks meant to protect kids also trap legitimate owners out of their own hardware.
