A mechanical light bulb from 1675
science
Maker Drake Anthony is recreating a seventeenth-century experiment, vacuum-sealing mercury in custom-blown glass vessels. Mechanically agitating the liquid metal inside these evacuated containers produces a triboelectric glow—light generated by motion and friction. Adafruit Blog reports he's now testing different noble gas backfills and alternative materials to intensify the effect, turning a long-forgotten phenomenon into modern hands-on experimentation.
