Nearly four thousand people have been evacuated from campsites and holiday villages near Lacanau, on France's Atlantic coast west of Bordeaux, as returning winds and extreme heat threaten firefighters' efforts to contain the blazes. The Guardian reports the emergency, which is also affecting Spain, has been described by French president Emmanuel Macron as the toughest situation the country has faced since the second world war.
