Siege of Brookfield Historic Markers in New Braintree, Massachusetts

Two stone markers in New Braintree, Massachusetts commemorate King Philip's War, which broke out in 1675 after decades of tension between English settlers and the Wampanoag Confederacy over land expansion and broken treaties. Per Atlas Obscura, one marker sits near where militia led by Captain Edward Hutchinson were ambushed by Nipmuc warriors on August second—an attack that killed or wounded more than half the men. Days later, Nipmuc forces laid siege to Brookfield village, trapping roughly eighty colonists in a fortified house until relief arrived. The war that followed devastated New England, destroying dozens of settlements and nearly eliminating entire Indigenous nations. Yet this consequential conflict has become almost entirely forgotten, leaving only these weathered markers as reminders of a tragedy that would reshape the continent.
