Establishing the Digital Opportunity Data Collection; Modernizing the FCC Form 477 Data Program; Delete, Delete, Delete

The Federal Communications Commission yesterday proposed changes to modernize how broadband coverage data is collected and reported. According to the FCC, the Broadband Data Collection program will be streamlined to eliminate outdated requirements. Specifically, the agency is considering allowing internet providers to phase out legacy data submissions for three G mobile service and mobile voice coverage. The FCC is also proposing to simplify the process for providers to report fixed broadband availability, and to relax certain technical requirements for fixed wireless carriers—like the seven-meter antenna height standard used in coverage modeling. On the verification side, the FCC wants to streamline how service providers challenge coverage claims and how the National Broadband Map is updated. The agency seeks public comment on protecting sensitive data, including subscription information and the locations of wireless base stations. The changes reflect the commission's effort to reduce reporting burdens on carriers while still collecting the accurate, detailed information needed to guide broadband infrastructure investment.
