At least five people are dead and nine remain missing after a six point eight magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan on Tuesday. The quake, centered on Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu island, registered a maximum of seven on Japan's shindo intensity scale, injuring hundreds and cutting power and water to tens of thousands. The Guardian reports the military has mobilized thousands of personnel as rescue teams search for the missing amid ongoing aftershocks.
