Dietary Choices: A Multi-objective Optimisation Problem

other

Per LessWrong, a new framework approaches dietary choices as a multi-objective optimization problem. Rather than declaring one diet 'best,' the model makes explicit the value judgments and factual assumptions underlying diet decisions. It weighs three competing objectives: minimizing harm to others, health risk to yourself, and the effort required to maintain the diet. Different dietary patterns—from omnivorous to vegan—involve trade-offs among those dimensions. Moving toward plant-based eating generally reduces environmental and animal suffering harms, but may increase effort and nutritional complexity, particularly at dietary extremes. The author argues that distinguishing between normative questions—which outcomes matter and how to weight them—and empirical ones—how diets perform in practice—can clarify disagreements and help people make choices aligned with their values.
