Australian inflation has eased a little. An August interest rate rise now looks unlikely

business

Australia's inflation has eased. Per The Conversation, the consumer price index rose three point eight percent in the year to June—down from four percent in May. Core inflation, measured by the trimmed mean, stayed flat at three point six percent. This easing means financial markets now see almost no chance of an interest rate rise when the Reserve Bank meets August tenth and eleventh. But there's a complication: oil prices recently spiked above one hundred dollars a barrel following escalating tensions in Iran. Those higher oil costs ripple through transport, freight, and production expenses across the economy, and when sustained, businesses typically pass them along to consumers. The RBA has raised rates three times already this year and says it's prepared to act if new inflation risks emerge. So while the June numbers are encouraging, the bank's August decision will ultimately depend on whether oil prices stay elevated and how much that shock feeds into broader inflation.
