US blocks Iranian missile barrage as pause in fighting falters | First Thing

world

The Pentagon says it intercepted every missile in a barrage Iran launched at US forces in the Middle East on Tuesday, an attack Washington called an attempted surprise strike that shattered a recent pause in fighting. US forces also worked with Saudi Arabia to hit sites in Iraq that Tehran-backed militias have reportedly used to launch attacks. The Guardian reports the escalation came the same day Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with President Trump at the White House, a meeting both sides described as productive. Trump also met separately with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who pressed for more air defense support as the region's conflicts increasingly intersect.
