Frontier Lab Employee Open Letter Calls For Being Able to Pace the Frontier

An open letter signed by more than twelve hundred employees of frontier AI labs—including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta—has called for the development of tools and governance mechanisms to help pace artificial intelligence advancement. LessWrong reports that the signatories, including multiple CEOs and senior researchers, are not asking for an immediate slowdown, but rather requesting that the U.S. government support an international effort to prepare frameworks for future coordination on AI development. The reasoning, per the letter: as AI companies approach the ability to automate AI research itself, capability development could accelerate beyond human ability to understand or control resulting systems. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have officially endorsed the initiative.
