MIT and Broad Institute researchers have achieved a fundamental breakthrough in microscopy, according to MIT News. Scientists led by Sam Peng developed U-STORM, a super-resolution imaging platform using engineered nanoparticles that spontaneously blink under light—overturning decades of scientific consensus that such blinking was impossible. The system achieves precision a thousand times finer than conventional fluorescent dyes, while drastically simplifying the imaging process: it requires just one laser, no complex imaging buffers, and the nanoparticles blink indefinitely. The team successfully mapped protein structures in living cells, establishing a new design principle for molecular imaging.
