OpenAI launches free AI access program for academic researchers

Axios reports OpenAI is providing one hundred thousand academic researchers free access to its most powerful AI models through twenty twenty-seven. Selected scientists, mathematicians, and engineers receive GPT-five point six Sol Pro and can invite four collaborators into the program. The access is valued at roughly two hundred dollars per month. There's a significant limitation: researchers won't get the underlying model weights or training data—information many argue is essential to independently evaluate how these systems work and whether they're safe. OpenAI says this program is part of a two hundred fifty million dollar commitment to external research through twenty twenty-seven.
