Yet more qubit tech: New quantum dot options, diamond vacancies

The quantum computing field continues to pursue multiple competing technologies, each betting they can solve the central challenge: scaling from a handful of qubits to the thousands required for practical computation. Ars Technica reports this week brought two notable advances. Quantum dots, which trap a single electron, can be manufactured using the same processes that build traditional computer chips—a key advantage for scaling. IBM was convinced enough to acquire the startup behind one new quantum dot approach. In parallel, a processor holding one hundred individual electrons in diamond defects has demonstrated that this technology, whose scalability wasn't obvious until now, can achieve significant scale. The field is exploring multiple distinct paths toward the same goal.
