Senators Push Federal Regulator to Prove School Bus Safety Data Is Accurate

Two senior Democrats on the Senate Commerce Committee are demanding proof that federal regulators can actually catch unsafe bus operators. Sens. Maria Cantwell and Ed Markey sent a letter to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration after a ProPublica and WBUR investigation found dozens of deadly crashes missing from the safety record of Transdev, one of the nation's largest transit and school bus operators. The reporting traces back to the April twenty twenty-five death of a Boston kindergartner run over by his own school bus, a case in which federal records showed no sign Transdev was involved. The senators want a full accounting of inspections and crashes by August twelfth, ProPublica reports, including an explanation for why at least forty-two fatal crashes tied to the company over the past decade never showed up in federal data.
