New Zealand’s Southern Wilderness

Per NASA News, Stewart Island, New Zealand's third-largest island and southernmost inhabited one, is home to thousands of Stewart Island kiwis—a subspecies so numerous it dwarfs the island's five hundred people. Rakiura National Park blankets about eighty-five percent of the island in podocarp forests, shrublands, and wetlands, supporting diverse birdlife from bellbirds to the rare kākāpō, the world's only flightless parrot. Conservationists are now working to eliminate invasive predators—rats, possums, feral cats, and hedgehogs—to protect these ecosystems. The island's Māori name, Rakiura, meaning glowing skies, captures its draw as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, where aurora australis and southern stars shine unfettered.
