Australia’s online watchdog is taking messaging app Telegram to court over ‘pro-terrorist’ posts

Australia's eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, is taking Telegram to Federal Court over claims the encrypted messaging app failed to remove pro-terrorist content, including footage from the Christchurch mosque attack and the Buffalo mass shooting, even after user reports. The Conversation reports the case marks the first time the commissioner has legally enforced online safety codes that took effect a year ago. Telegram, which has around a billion users worldwide, says it rejects the allegations and will contest them in court, adding it has already removed more than two hundred million pieces of terrorist content. If the case succeeds, Inman Grant has said she'll consider asking the court to ban the app in Australia entirely.
