The Bayeux Tapestry: how optical techniques have let this artwork come home

The Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth depicting the Norman invasion of England in ten sixty-six, has returned to England for the first time since its creation there more than nine centuries ago. The artwork, just fifty centimeters wide but more than sixty-eight meters long, arrived at the British Museum under police escort on July tenth and will remain on display through next July. According to Physics World, its extreme fragility made transporting such a delicate object across the Channel from Normandy exceptionally risky—until optical physics techniques made it safe. Researchers used high-resolution imaging, infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet imaging to meticulously document the tapestry's condition and conservation needs. These non-invasive methods revealed everything from the original artist's draft sketches beneath the wool stitching to over nine thousand holes and tens of thousands of stains accumulated over the centuries. A detailed three-dimensional model is now available free online, allowing anyone to study this priceless embroidery in unprecedented detail without ever handling the fragile cloth.
