Republican disenfranchisement bid drives Black voters to polls, study finds

The Guardian reports that Black voters in the South are turning out in larger numbers in response to Republican redistricting pushes. Following a late April Supreme Court ruling that weakened voting rights protections, Republican legislatures in Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama moved to redraw congressional maps in ways intended to dilute Black political power, while Mississippi's governor has signaled he wants similar action before the midterm elections. An analysis indicates these efforts are having the opposite effect: Black voter engagement is rising and southern counties are shifting further left.
