Water joins energy as top AI flashpoint

Major tech companies are pivoting from defending AI data centers' electricity consumption to justifying their water use. But according to Axios, they're facing significant headwinds: roughly seventy percent of Americans say they'd oppose data centers in their communities, citing water use equally with energy concerns. The United Nations Secretary General this week called for mandatory transparency on AI infrastructure's environmental footprint. Virginia, which hosts more data centers than any other state, is moving to restrict the most water-intensive cooling methods. Experts note that while data centers actually use less water than industries like power generation, the real friction point is local — a data center in a drought-prone region creates problems regardless of how it ranks nationally. The upshot: tech is facing a new PR and policy problem, and transparency appears to be the industry's answer.
