Fixing a JMicron-Based M.2 USB Enclosure That Stopped Working

Hackaday reports on a persistent problem with early Orico TCM2-C3 USB-to-M.2 adapters. These enclosures use a JMicron controller that was designed to run at bare-minimum voltage—roughly zero point nine five volts instead of the nominal one point zero—as a cost-saving measure. Over time, component aging causes the actual voltage to fall below the minimum the chip needs to start, leaving the device unresponsive. There's a fix: adjusting the voltage back to nominal one point zero volts restores functionality, though the controller does run hotter. Later versions of the TCM2-C3 switched to a Realtek controller, which has proven significantly more reliable. The transparent case makes it easy to identify which revision you have.
