Can pumping groundwater really flip Earth’s poles? An expert explains

A government official in Australia's Northern Territory recently suggested pumping groundwater might help steady Earth's spin and prevent the poles from flipping. That claim, reported by The Conversation, conflates two very different phenomena and misunderstands how Earth actually works. There are two north poles: the geographic one, where Earth's rotation axis meets the surface, and the magnetic one, where the magnetic field points straight down. Groundwater pumping does shift the geographic pole—by roughly four centimeters per year. That's measurable, but harmless. The magnetic pole, by contrast, is generated deep inside Earth's core, in swirling liquid iron thousands of kilometers beneath us. Magnetic reversals do occur, but only occasionally—the last one was roughly eight hundred thousand years ago—and they take thousands of years to unfold. They're almost certainly unaffected by anything we do at the surface. So while we can influence the climate, we cannot flip Earth's magnetic core.
