Burnham to free mayors from ‘Treasury death grip’ with new devolved powers

The Guardian reports that English regional mayors will gain new fiscal powers. Starting in twenty twenty-eight, mayors will keep a share of income tax generated in their areas, and will control business rates totalling tens of millions of pounds by April twenty twenty-seven. Local leaders say this plan will transform funding by freeing English regions from relying on Whitehall handouts for projects.
