Rebuilding an Obsolete IC to Save a Betacam SP Tapedeck

tech

A Sony professional video tape recorder from the broadcast era had a strange color glitch: no color during normal playback, but odd stripes when paused. Per Hackaday, the culprit was a sync separator chip no longer manufactured. Rather than abandon the hardware, one engineer sourced a modern replacement and adapted it with a voltage regulator, inverter, and amplifier to match the original specs. They designed a custom circuit board that worked as a plug-in replacement, and open-sourced the solution.
