Best-Ever Brainstem Map Created by Indian Scientists

Hackaday reports that scientists at the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre in India have created the most detailed map of the brainstem ever produced. The brainstem is small but critically important—even minimal damage can be fatal—yet how it works remains poorly understood. The team used a cost-effective approach: high-resolution microscopy instead of more expensive imaging methods. They analyzed samples spanning different ages, from a forty-five-week fetus to a fifty-four-year-old, using M-R-I and block-face imaging to slice tissue into microscopic sections, then assembled the images into a three-D model available for online exploration. The detailed mapping could advance research on neurological diseases including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, though the findings await peer review.
